Hiraeth's Guide To Grunge

We go in and out of fashions very quickly these days and new trends are always being created for the younger generation. However grunge isn't a new thing. Formed in the early nineties, grunge was a fashion or style derived from the rock movement which was characterised by unkempt clothing and aggressive nihilistic songs from artists like Nirvana. Today grunge isn't quite the same as it used to be, however it more or less gives you the same idea. So today I am bringing to you my guide on being "grunge"!

Makeup
Because makeup isn't a big part of the grunge culture, I'll start off with this and try not to get into too much detail. Usually you'd want to avoid makeup however if you do intend on wearing some, I'd suggest a very pale foundation or powder for the face. For eyes I'd only opt for eyeliner and mascara and maybe some smoky eye shadow if you're feeling a little fancy!
If you want an actual tutorial, go onto YouTube and watch okaysage's video on 'Grunge Inspired Makeup.'

Hair
Typically you want to leave your hair thick and wavy (if your hair is naturally like this, you are so lucky) but there are other ways you can style your hair, if you want to keep it out of your face. Some of the best hairstyles are the simplest. For example you can do French or Dutch braids which are perfect if you have straight hair as once you take them out, will leave natural looking waves.

You can also do space buns, a half up ponytail or buns.
The main goal is to just make it look slightly messy, so if you are going to have your hair up, make sure you have a couple of flyaways!

These are some of the things you may need for grunge looking hairstyles.

1. A curler (if your hair isn't naturally wavy) or straightner if your like me and have to have perfectly straight hair to braid so it's easier.
2. Heat protection so you don't ruin your hair.
3. Hair ties or scrunchies if you're feeling extra ninties!
4. Bobby pins- lots of them. Because I have thick and unmanageable hair, doing any kind of bun is a challenge, so I like to have a load on pins at the ready!
5. A brush or comb, if you want to tease your hair so it looks more messy.
6. Hairspray, to keep it in place.

Again, your hair doesn't have to be perfect, it's meant to look a little messy!

Clothing
Becaue 'grunge' clothing is so different from how it was originally in the nineties, I'm going to divide it into four catagories (tops, which I'm including jackets into as well, bottoms, shoes and accessories) and I'll try write as little as possible and use pictures to describe them better!

Tops
Original grunge nineties is quite rough and scruffy so just a a plain t-shirt will do.
Usually black is the best colour however other colours like red, white, grey, blue, if it's dark, it'll work.
Band tees are also perfect.
If your feeling a little more modern, button   -up shirts are really nice, tight rib crop tops.
I've also noticed brands like Nike and Adidas are described as 'grunge' too.
So more modern grunge colours I would go with are mustard yellow, pastel pink, army green, patterns or stripes.
Flannel shirts are also a nice addition which you can tie around your waist or use to layer in the colder months.
Two main types of jackets I would wear are leather jackets or denim jackets. Typically you'd want to get black just because it so so versatile and it goes with everything but you can so many in different colours now and you can personalise them with patches and little pins.

Bottoms
This is something that I would want to keep a little more basic. Just some simple skinny or boyfriend jeans (ripped or not) a short pleat skirt. I feel like just simple colours like black or a light blue would work best but you can try experiment with other colours too!

Shoes
My favourite type of 'grunge' shoe are the classic black Doc Marten! These are also super hard wearing and will last for years. However these are a little on the pricey side but you can get cheaper ones from other stores too.
Also the plain black or white Converse or Vanswill work too.
Basically any black or white boot or sneaker will go with a grunge outfit.
Another shoe which is a little more modern is the Adidas Superstar, which I love, they are very comfy and stylish.

Accessories
For accessories, in regards to jewellery, it would keep it simple. Studs, maybe a few bracelets. Chokers are very popular too, however it isn't a must.

I like that baseball caps are coming back in and suits most people. You can get them in all kinda of colors and if your wearing all black, this is a good splash (not too much thought) of colour.

So that was my (very) visual guide on grunge! I hope you liked it and got a few ideas from it! Tell me other stuff you think is "grunge" too!

Also from the 27th of January to the 3rd of February, I will be posting everyday as part of my Back To School series!

Until next time,

About My Instagram

Like every other teenager in the entire universe, I do have a Instagram account, where I love to share my whole life in filtered photo. So I thought this is a good idea to make a blog post about!

1. What's your Instagram username? @isobellacook (you should totally follow me btw)  however if my blog gets more popular, hopefully I plan on changing it to @hiraethisnotinteresting.

2. When did you create your Instagram account? Around the end of 2014 I think.

3. First picture you posted?
This one got around 116 likes I think? I took this on my plane journey when traveling to Australia.

4. How many times do you log in per day/week? Too many.

5. Worst picture?
This photo got just over 200 likes but look at my face! Hair unwashed, bad lighting, black and white, this looks more like a MySpace picture from 2007. Why haven't I deleted it?!

6.Most liked photo?
This one has nearly 400 likes. I mean, it's not my favourite selfie ever but that's just how life works I guess.

7. How many followers do you have? How many people follow you?
I have around 1.7k followers, which isn't that much and I follow just under 300 people which is literally just my four best friends and band members.

8. Last person who liked your photo?
My friend Ginya :-)

9. Name one celebrity/brand that you follow. Do any celebrities or brands follow you?
I follow Lush Cosmetics because to be honest, who doesn't follow them now? A brand who follows me is actually a record company called Hopeless Records who have signed bands like All Time Low an The Wonder Years. I don't know why they followed me but I do feel very chuffed abou that.

10. Top three liked pictures?

11. Last picture you posted?
This one of gnash who is a artist on Soundcloud and makes amazing music.

So that was the Instagram Tag and I hoped you enjoyed it. Just if anyone wanted to know I use vsco to edit my photos and I use the HB1 filter too! Comment down below your Instagram usernames or anyother social media and I'll be sure to check them out and follow you!

Also from the 27th of January to the 2nd of February I will be posting everyday on my Back To School series! So stick around to see those!

How To Manage Your Time!

School can be pretty hectic, with assignments, projects, exams, not to mention balancing things like extra-curriculars, family and friends! So for the fifth part of my Back To School series, I have done a couple of ways on how to manage your time!

Make A Schedule!

When me and my family went camping, we would always put the bigger things in the trunk first, like our tents, and furniture. We would then put in the smaller things in the remaining spaces, so everything was able to fit neatly in!
You can do the same thing when managing your time. Make space for the big things first, and you'll have more time for the little things.
So get a planner and prioritise what you need to do. Or maybe keep it on your phone, a desk planner, even a small notepad for it.

Stick To It!

Easier said than done however sticking to the schedule will help you do better when managing your time. Don't just schedule the things you have to do, add the things you enjoy. Also have someone to aim for, set little goals to keep you on track.

Be Neat And Organised!

This is the one I personally struggle with, my room is always getting messy! However having everything neat saves you time when you need to look for something and gives you peace of mind. Try to put things back in place as soon as you can. Do this regularly instead of waiting for it to get out control. Try make neatness a habit.

So that was just a quick post on how to manage your time a little better! I only have two more posts before my series is finished! Also two days until I go back to school! Anyway comment down below, what you do to manage your time, and I'll be back tomorrow with a new post.

Until next time,

The Emergency Kit!

It's cold a dreary Monday morning. You walk along the concrete of your school, the dark clouds looming over your head like a deadly disease. You exhale cold air, your breath forming miniature mists. You have a pounding headache, as if an army of ants were crawling in your brain, too bad you didn't bring any painkillers. Your hair hangs lankly over your face and you have to keep flicking it over your shoulder- if only you brought a hair tie! As you think to yourself this day can not get any worse, a colossal boom shatters your train of thought and suddenly it's starts to pour down, instantly soaking you. You groan, cursing yourself for not being more prepared.

Sound familiar? Never have the thing you desperately need in that moment? Well, as part of my 2016 Back To School series, I bring to you the Emergency Kit, equipped with all your basic school needs!

Medical Essentials

  • Band aids- If you're anything like me and super clumsy and always managing to hurt yourself, this is what you need! I've always found keeping these in my bag really handy (especially if you're late to class and are running halfway across the school!)
  • Hand sanitizer- Schools are dirty as hell and if you don't want to catch any diseases, this is a good idea.
  • Painkillers- I am the type of person easily prone to sudden headaches, so keeping these is a must, it's also good to have these if your friend has a headache too!
  • Cough drops- Kind of like the previous ones, cough drops are good to keep in your bag, if you have a cold but you still go to school and your coughing your lungs out.
  • Tissues- Again, if your sick, you'll need these big time because no one likes to listen to snotty sniffing while doing their work, it's just plain disgusting.

Beauty Essentials

  • Girl stuff- (awkward coughing) Yeah not too much to explain about.
  • Dental floss- not something that would come to mind first, but if you or someone else has stuff stuck in their teeth, it's comforting to know you got it sorted.
  • Deodorant- these are good to keep in your bag, if you forgot to put some on before you left, before a sports class or if you just feel kind of gross. I would keep a roll on deodorant in my bag since its smaller and more discreet that the massive spray ones which are better for home. Just don't lend it to anyone!
  • Lip balm- I'm the type of person who has really dry lips so keeping a lip balm comes in handy especially in the summer. I tend to have lip balm with spf 30.
  • Hair ties and bobby pins- I usually have my hair out at school but if it gets too hot I'll want to tie it up and pin it back. Again, your friend may need to borrow it too, so it pays to pack at least four hair ties and a handful of pins.
  • Moisturiser- It's just comforting to know, if I feel a little crusty I can whip it out and use it. I usually get like a little clear bottle (you can purchase it from any store) and pour it into it from your bigger bottle.
Also I don't wear any makeup at school but if you do, it may pay to bring some foundation, powder, concealer and oil blog wipes just to touch up as the day goes.

Extra Essentials

  • Umbrella- Here in New Zealand the weather can be pretty unpredictable, so I keep and umbrella at the bottom of my bag. If you don't want to put that in your bag, you can get compacted rain jackets too.
  • Headphones- Being a teenager in the twenty-first century, to have that on hand is just a given.
  • Gum- I get the ones in little tubs because, I find that it just lasts longer, especially when you have friends who seem to attack you when you pull any out.
  • Portable phone charger- good idea if you don't like being sad.
So that guys, is my school emergency kit! It sounds like a lot, but because it's all relatively small, it doesn't take up a lot of room. I like to keep this in my bag but if you have lockers at your school, it's a good place to keep it too! Did I forget anything? Tell me down in the comments below.

I'm over halfway in my Back To School series and I be back tomorrow with a new post! If you haven't read my previous three, be sure to check them out.

Until next time,

Back To School Planner

Seeing as this year, I have a lot of big assessments and exams at school (FUN) I thought it was time I get my act together and purchase a planner! So for the third part of my 2016 Back To School series, I am going to through my planner and how (badly) I organise it.

So this is my planner, I think I mentioned a couple of weeks ago in my favourites posts. I picked this one up from Typo, and it's just the basic buffalo  weekly planner. It in in the marble texture and has 2016 on the front in rose gold. I am absolutely in love with it, I think if you're glinting to get a planner, it definitely has to be one that fits your aesthetic so you're motivated to use it more.

When you open it up, it shows this little illustration, which is very vintage and gives you room to put you name on. I just thought it was a little nice touch and adds to the look of it.

It then gives you a page to put all your personal information, which I haven't got a picture for since I've put things like my phone number and address.

The next two pages is a grid calendar which I use to put my school term dates and birthdays on.

Over the page it gives a reference calendar which just has last year's this year's and next year's dates on it.

It also has a couple of pages of public holidays and school term dates all over the world and I've just highlighted New Zealand.

It has a contacts list which I haven't actually had the time to fill in yet but I will at some point.

Over the page it has a section of your birthstones, wedding anniversary symbols, astrology and Chinese zodiac which I thought was interesting seeing as it's not something you usually see in planners these days.

Okay now into the actual planning part. So it first gives you a monthly calendar which is where I put the shifts I'm working, when I'm getting paid, how much I should be getting paid, school assessments or projects that are due and when I'm supposed to be uploading a new post on here along with what the post is going to be about.

It also has a colum on the right hand side where I have little monthly goals, more stuff about my blog and friends birthdays.

After the monthly calendar it has it in a weekly form where I go more into depth about school projects, blog posts, what I need to buy and my goals. As you can see there is quite a bit of room to put ideas down.

So that was my planner! I think the planner I have is perfect for me because I can have a brief criteria of what I want to achieve and then a more in depth section for me to jot my ideas down! I know some people don't find it interesting but personally for me, I think it's fascinating so I hop someone does to, or at the very least, gives you ideas about what you want!  Tell me down in the comment about your ideal planner or what you put in yours.

Until next time,
